Borgata Paraloup is a cultural center and a hybrid space, which offers cultural, social and tourist services, where you can live a welcoming, supportive and sustainable community experience all year round.
Paraloup, "sheltered from wolves" in Occitan, is an alpine village located at 1360 m in the municipality of Rittana, in the province of Cuneo, in Valle Stura.
The Borgata has welcomed shepherds and flocks for centuries and, during the Resistance, was the seat of the partisan band Italia Libera and a place of transformation for about 200 twenty-year-olds who, peasants, students, artisans from all over Italy, here turned into partisans and went down to the valley to fight for the liberation of Italy from Nazi-fascism, including Nuto Revelli, Duccio Galimberti, Livio Bianco.
After a long period of depopulation, in 2008 the Nuto Revelli Foundation decided to recover and regenerate the township to create and make available to the community, schools and the general public a physical and dynamic witness of a double memory: that of partisan war and that of rural mountain life.
Today Paraloup is a laboratory of cultural and social innovation, for a sustainable return to life, development and creativity in the mountains, a return guided by awareness and sensitivity to the historical memory of the people who inhabited this place, which hosted a very particular form of Resistance, a "Community Resistance" and which today declines among its huts this vocation in its strongly hybrid nature, experimental and multidisciplinary.
The Borgata currently consists of the following huts: the Baita Perona (reception and site-specific artistic installations) the refreshment hut (bar and restaurant), three guest houses where you can stay overnight, the Baita Barberis used as an archive-film library as well as coworking and multifunctional room, an outdoor theater, the Museum of Tales and the "Anello forte" laboratory, two experimental gardens
In addition, for two years we have brought pastoralism and dairy production back to the township! The shepherd Gianvittorio and his 150 goats, live together with us and graze around the huts from April to October. The cheeses we produce are produced in the small dairy built not far away and can be purchased at the refreshment point. The goats, of the Roccaverano breed, are fed only with plants and wild herbs that grow in the lands of the Valli Libere land association, allowing their milk to reach a very high nutraceutical quality.
The project we try to carry out is to create an autonomous and sustainable territorial micro-system in a mountain and marginal territory, through the affirmation of a cultural identity capable of driving the economic and social development of the territory.
